Child
ID Software Program FAQ:
Please
review this faq to see if the problem you are experiencing has already
been solved.
If you have a problem with your Child ID software that is not covered
here, then please e-mail me so we can solve the problem. When a
child is missing, the LAST thing you need is a software problem.
FAQ
1)
Q: Does the software run on an apple or on linux?
A: It has not been tested on non-windows systems.
2)
Q: While running the interview, the program got stuck on the "READING
CHILD DATA" stage. What do I do?
A: The software reads the original child data until it finds "EOF"
at the bottom of the file "datatable.txt". If for some
reason the datatable.txt file does not have EOF at the bottom of
the file, the program will hang. The fix is to first hit ctrl-c
to exit the interview, then open the file "C:\childId\datatable.txt"
and add the word EOF to the bottom of the file. This is a known
bug that appeared occasionally in version 1.1 and was fixed in version
1.2.
3)
Q: When I run "setup", the message says it can't find
my software. What do I do?
A: Create a folder on your c drive root. Name it "Childid".
Then you can manually copy all the Child Id files into that folder,
and run "c:\start.bat". This problem could occur if the
setup file can't find your Child Id files. Setup looks at the root
folder of every drive A-Z to find your installable software. If
it fails to find the files, it ends with a message that refers you
to this website.
4)
Q: When I run "setup", I see the message "Access
Denied", and the software doesn't work.
A: You need to be logged onto your computer with permission to write
to the c: root folder. If you are a guest or have other restricted
permissions, you may not be able to install the software. Please
contact your technical support desk and ask them to give you more
permissions to your computer.
5)
Q: My child has grown / gained weight / etc. since our information
was placed on the floppy disk. I would like to update the information.
How do I do that?
A: You can download UpdateData.zip and run the update tool, or you
could edit the data file manually. The data file is called datatable.txt.
We do not recommend manually updating the file. The file format
must be "DataTitle: DATA" with one space between the colon
and the data. The UpdateData.zip tool will find the original data
file, ask you what to change, and update the file with the new information.
It will also create a backup of the original information. The tool
has been included in version 1.2 so you won't need it unless you
are running version 1.1.
6)
Q: I have windows 98 and when I ran a:\setup, nothing happened.
(Software did not install.)
A: Although the ChildID program runs fine on Windows 98, the installer
does not. To install the software on a Windows 98 computer, follow
these steps: 1) Create a folder on the c:\ root called "Childid"
(C:\CHILDID) 2) copy the contents of the A:\ drive into the C:\CHILDID
folder. 3) Go to the C:\CHILDID folder and double-click "START.BAT".
We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused, and will correct
the installer in the next version update.
